Poetic monodrama The Day of Setting the Record Straight is a solo project by Marija Đajić. It was her graduation project for her Master’s Degree at the Faculty of Dramatic Arts in Belgrade. This is also the first project of Poetic Theatre BiT which was established as a coprodution between Belgrade and Trebinje. Using and cultivating poetry in its work is what defines the Poetic Theatre BiT.
Working on this play meant crossing the path from reality to imagination, from poetry to drama, and ultimately tranforming an actor who always says and does what others tell him to into an actor who is an explorer, a dramaturge and a director all in one.
This play is based on true events from the life of poets Rade Drainac and Elisaveta Bagryana. It is a story of their love, full of chaos and scandals. They met in May 1930 in Sofia where Drainac worked as the first Serbian news correspondent in Bulgaria after the Great War.
We learn a lot about their personal life from Elisaveta’s argument with the musician Drainac had sent her as a way of apologising for their fight earlier. Songs used in the play serve to complement their beliefs and basic human needs.
Today, we face the same obstacles Drainac and Bagryana had, the enemy just has a different face.
What if we realize we are in love with someone from a different religious or national background? Do we betray our family, our country, our faith and our people if we don’t give up on our love?
